titleWhen To Wean Your Baby From The Bottle/titlepIve seen many parents giving their children bottles at age 3, but weaning from the bottle can actually be done around 12-18 months of age. In fact, both my children were weaned off the bottle shortly after their first birthdays. Weaning was relatively stress free because I had established eating and sleeping routines early on. A few minor changes in these routines was all it took to wean them completely off the bottle./ppThere are a few reasons why I decided to wean my children from the bottle at this age:/ppulliA child who drinks from the bottle has a greater chance of developing tooth decay and improper dental development./liliBottle feeding can interfere with a childs nutritional needs because they may not consume enough solid foods./liliIt may be more difficult to wean an older child from the bottle than a younger child./liliI hated washing bottles!/li/ulbrYoure child still needs 16-24 ounces of milk each day, so you can start by gradually transferring the milk from the bottle to a cup or sippy cup. I did it one bottle at a time. I started giving them 8 ounces of milk in a cup, then 16, then 24./ppAs a parent, you should know when youre child is ready to wean from the bottle. You may feel that 12 months is too early, or maybe its the right time. Listen to your babys cues and choose a time in your life that isnt loaded with stress. For example, a new sibling or moving to a new home may be too much for your child to deal with, so its better to wait until things settle down./ppWhen it comes to weaning, its best to plan ahead and have some kind of idea in your mind as to how youll go about it. What is Strangles?
Strangles is an infectious disease that affects horses. It is caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus Equi and is the most important infectious disease to effect our horses today.
Strangles is highly contagious and spreads quickly from horse to horse. Some of the most common signs of strangles will be pus discharging from the horses nasal passages. Abscesses will form in the lymph glands under the jaw and often burst and exude a thick yellow pus.
Horses of all ages are susceptible, though strangles is most common in animals less than 5 years of age. Weanlings and yearlings are especially susceptible. Foals are usually protected by their mothers colostrum-derived passive immunity.
Transmission is contracted by direct or indirect contact of susceptible animals with a diseased horse. The disease is maintained in the horse population by ‘carrier’ horses. Those are horses that can carry the disease but do not contract the disease.
Indirect contact will occur when your horses come into contact with contaminated feed, buckets, stall walls and doors. Horses in a pasture environment may contract the disease from water troughs, fencing and through flies.
Horses infected with this disease may have associated fever, depression and may stop eating.
Although this disease is highly debilitating, with up to 3-4 months recovery time, most horses will survive the disease. Unfortunately, some horses will contract a chronic illness and worse yet, death may be the result.
An infected horse must be quarantined and your veterinary should be contacted immediately at the first signs of this disease.

Choosing Between Disposable Coveralls and Protective Shirt and Pants
On your search for safety apparel, you have likely come to the point where you need to choose between coveralls or two-piece suits consisting of protective shirts and pants. The first consideration should be one of safety. The second part of consideration is a balance between comfort, practicality, and affordability. While both options are effective, each one has various benefits and downfalls that can make a big difference in your satisfaction of a product.
Safety Considerations
While neither is necessarily chemical proof, one-piece disposable coveralls do offer slightly more protection. One of the biggest reasons is the gaps that can occur between the two pieces. Coveralls come with elastic sleeves and cuffs to help protect you from chemical splashes and particulate matter. Safety tops only come with elastic or non-elastic cuffs with the collar and bottom remaining loose.
Choices For Comfort
One of the biggest downfalls of one-piece safety suits is the simple fact that they are exactly that — all one piece. They can be faster to put on than separates, but they restrict your overall movement. This is particularly true if the suit is too small. With separates, the protective shirts and pants move independently from each other and allow for unlimited expansion between the two.
Some people choose to buy coveralls that are a few sizes too big to allow for extra movement. While this might be acceptable in some situations, this is nothing short of dangerous in situations where you will be working with machinery of any kind. The excess material can become caught in the machine, pulling your body into the machine. Always select clothing that is big enough that you are not straining against the seams, but not too big that the material hangs and bunches in front.
Affordable Selections
In many situations, you will notice that one portion of your clothing needs to withstand more abuse than the rest of your protective gear. If you are wiping stain onto hardwood, for example, you may notice that your sleeves are coated while the rest of your clothing remains almost untouched. If you are spraying pesticides onto the grass, on the other hand, you will notice that your pant legs need to be replaced before the rest. In these cases, you may be better to purchase protective shirts and pants rather than one-piece suits. This saves you a significant amount of money because it costs less to replace one portion than it is to purchase a new suit.
Similarly, you may only need to use half of a suit, and therefore, purchasing safety apparel that covers your entire body would simply be a waste of material and money. For situations where you will need to replace your entire outfit between jobs, coveralls would make the better choice since they are often more cost effective to purchase than two separate pieces.
Selecting the right safety clothing requires that you determine any safety requirement the job will entail. Once you know what you need to keep yourself safe, you can consider the financial and personal preferences for the job to decide for yourself whether a complete outfit is better than separate protective shirts and pants.

Intellectual Property is Your Greatest Asset – Four Ways to Create Value
Intellectual Property makes you or your business worth more than you can be worth on your own. IP lets you command a premium for your services. It lets you make money in your sleep. It lets you create a business that can be sold to others or passed on to your heirs.
Too often IP discussions focus only on legal rights: patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, domain names and right of publicity. These are important, of course. But the are the merely legal tools for protecting key business assets. The starting point for IP should be the underlying assets: information, innovation, content, brands, names, reputation, websites, and more.
Applying IP rights to these key assets can create value in four important ways.
1. Charge a premium for your goods and services.
Consider generic cola v. COKE. Why is one worth more? Because Coca-Cola has used IP to enhance the value of a simple commodity. It receives a premium because it has a secret formula and a distinctive well-known brand. Generic cola has a formula, too, but its not secret; it also has a name, but it is not distinctive. Anyone can make cola and use the cola name. IP keeps COKE from being copied. The formula is protected as a trade secret and the brand is protected as a trademark.
2. Earn additional revenue.
Consider the average software developer v. Microsoft. The software developer is a knowledge worker paid for her labor. If she doesn’t work, she can’t make any money. Without her work, her business has no value. Microsoft uses IP to turn the product of many knowledge workers into property that can be licensed and sold. Once that is done, Microsoft can make money without further time and effort from the knowledge worker. Copyrights and patents are the IP rights that keep others from copying Microsoft’s products.
3. Increase market valuation.
The value of a commodity business is typically the book value of its hard assets. The market value of an S&P 500 company is usually several times book value. The difference is largely the value of IP.
4. Create marketable assets.
Markets exist for the resale of IP rights. Ross Perot has invested in a $200 million IP fund based on patent assets. David Bowie raised $57 million selling bonds backed by the royalties in his recordings. These financial strategies let IP owners cash in on IP assets.
Corporations, entrepreneurs and business owners can benefit from the strategies by turning more of their business assets into valuable IP assets. Unfortunately, many ignore simple, inexpensive steps to secure these rights, leaving others – like Apple, Microsoft, and IBM – to charge ahead. What are you doing to secure your business success in the Internet age?

Horse Riding Apparel
Have you ever thought about riding your horse barefoot, with the wind whipping through your hair? It sounds nice, doesn’t it? However, you might want to think twice about this idea and instead consider some riding apparel. Its not exactly the same as riding without a hat (or boots), but a lot of riding apparel has a purpose – keeping you, the rider safe as you go galloping around.
Boots are a must, whether you are an adherent of the English or Western style of boot. Even when feeding your horse or grooming, it is still a good idea to wear your boots. After all, those hooves are very heavy and if your horse accidentally steps on your toes; well, let’s just say you’ll wish you had worn boots. English boots are a little uncomfortable for walking in, but cowboy boots can be very comfortable. However, for working in your stable, you may want to pick up a pair of hiking boots or work boots.
While not very many people are excited about wearing a riding helmet. After all, one would hardly call them stylish. At the same time, a riding helmet can quite literally be a lifesaver in the event of a fall. Your cowboy hat will also not provide adequate protection. For optimal protection, think about a vented riding helmet as you ride.
In competitive riding, you’ll have to stow your t-shirt and jeans. Western wear is perfectly comfortable for riding. English wear, on the other hand, is make less for comfort than for looks.
If the show you’re riding in asks for hunt seat attire, then you’ll have to wear a riding shirt which is either white or pinstriped. You’ll also need breeches, a hunting cap, dress riding boots and a wool riding jacket. Riding gloves are also customary in these events. Breeches and jacket can be any color which is dark, but you may want to find out what colors are “in” before making an investment in them. Being out of style may not win you favor with the judges or the audience.
You’ll need to dress formal for dressage riding. You’ll need a white shirt, a stock tie (which should be fastened with a horse-themed pin), white or tan breeches, black jacket and dress boots, as well as a helmet or hunt cap. If it is a saddle seat competition, then you’ll want dark jodhpurs, jodhpur boots, a riding derby, a dark jacket and white riding shirt.
Western riders wear different clothes depending on their gender. While men will need Western shirts, ties, belts (leather with silver buckles), felt cowboy hats and riding boots as well as jeans and chaps; women will be attired in Western tuxedo shirts, vest or jacket, bow ties, riding boots, felt hats and of course, jeans and chaps. In more intense sports, the ties and silver belt buckles are not required.
If you have a child who is riding, whether for fun or competitively, they must wear a riding helmet rather than a riding hat or a cowboy hat. Children especially are vulnerable to falls, so make sure that they are always protected.

Birthstones – The Modern List
There have been many different lists of stones that correspond with the months or signs of the zodiac. The most recent one is a list that was adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. This is the official list of birthstones used in the United States. Not only are certain stones associated with a given month, but each month has a color associated with it. These colors have been derived from the natural color of the individual birthstones. Following is the modern list of gemstones and corresponding colors:
- January - Garnet gemstone, deep red color. Although garnet is most often thought of as being a red stone, garnet occurs in every color except blue. Each color of garnet technically has its own name.
- February – Amethyst gemstone, purple color. Amethyst is one of the most popular gemstones and is worn by many regardless of their birth month. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz.
- March – Aquamarine gemstone, pale blue color. Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family of gems, along with emerald.
- April – Diamond gemstone, white or clear color. There is nothing else like the sparkle and fire of a good quality diamond in the world of gems.
- May - Emerald gemstone, green color. Emeralds are found in many countries, with Columbia and Brazil producing some of the finest stones.
- June – Pearl or Moonstone, white color. Pearls are the only gems that come from living creatures.
- July – Ruby gemstone, red color. Ruby and Sapphire are types of the mineral corundum. The only gemstone harder than a ruby or sapphire is a diamond.
- August - Peridot gemstone, pale green color. Peridot occurs in many areas of the world, and is also occasionally found in meteorites.
- September – Sapphire gemstone, deep blue color. Sapphire occurs in nature in many different colors besides blue, but the blue stone is associated with September.
- October – Opal gemstone, multi-colors or pink. There are two types of opals, precious and common. Precious opals are the stones that display the ‘fire’ or play of colors the stone is famous for.
- November – Yellow topaz or Citrine gemstones, yellow color. Yellow topaz of good quality is relatively rare and expensive. Citrine is often substituted.
- December – Blue topaz or turquoise gemstones, blue color. Blue topaz is sometimes irradiated to improve and deepen the blue color. Tanzanite was added to the December birthstone selections by the American Gem Trade Association in 2002.

What Business People Do to Maximize the Protection of Intellectual Property
When business people plan a save harbor of intellectual property (IP) they consider a wide spectrum of legal tools to maximize the protection of IP assets. The main point is that IP protection strategy should be kept from the beginning of creation, during its development until a design is complete. The strategy of securing design ownership starts with recognizing a design as a potential asset, and continues to carefully plan its protection throughout the lifetime of a design optimizing IP protection and reducing infringement risks. It may include these specific goals.
Goal 1: Generate design research. It should be done prior to the design challenge early in the long- term planning phase and in the concept generation stage of new product development. This general research includes a state of-the-art search of patent literature (patents and published patent applications), which is analyzed by the IP counsel and shared with the development team to spark design innovation. The good example of such research could be list of the following questions:
What’s the core intellectual idea or invention?
How easily can it be duplicated?
How did the idea/invention come about? Was the inventor working at another company? Was she a university researcher?
How might you protect against duplication via a patent, trademark, copyright, or some other vehicle?
How visible will the invention be within your product or service?
Goal 2: Avoid designs owned by others. Identify IP risks associated with the proposed design concepts-ideally, in the feasibility stage of new product development-so that risky design concepts can be screened out early. Once a design concept is selected for further development, a targeted search looks for patents relevant to that design concept. As needed, the IP counsel facilitates a “design around” to place the final design outside the scope of IP rights of others.
Goal 3: Secure IP rights. IP counsel leads the development team efforts to protect selected design concepts in the feasibility stage of new product development. IP protection is sought not only for the preferred design concept but also for alternative concepts that may later be preferred by the company or the company competitors. Before product launch, the IP counsel ensures that IP protections are in place, including foreign protection when a product will be sold or licensed overseas. And upon product launch, the IP counsel establishes procedures for monitoring the activities of competitors to police IP rights.
Goal 4: Enforce and expand design assets. Even after design protection has been secured, steps should be taken in the active life cycle phase to enforce IP rights. New competitive advantages can also be sought during the active life cycle phase in connection with design improvements.
Goal 5: Harvest design assets. In the decline or exit phase in which a design reaches its sunset, the IP counsel can help extract value from IP assets. Instead of allowing them to go unused, IP assets can be harvested at this final phase by licensing or selling IP assets to other companies or by using those assets as leverage to settle disputes with other companies.
The best way to protect IP assets is to follow the simple rule of “Be aware!” In other words, it is the responsibility of business people dealing with their intellectual property to manage IP assets protection by the implementation of the effective corporate intellectual property strategy. Undoubtedly, aforementioned 5 steps of this strategy will help to save a lot of money.

What’s a Good Tempo for My Horse?
First, let me define rhythm and tempo. I want to do this because lots of dressage riders use those terms interchangeably and they don’t mean the same thing.
Rhythm – Regularity of the rhythm refers to the even spacing between each step in a stride of walk, trot or canter. Regular rhythm is a priority for all work–whether or not you’re riding a pure dressage horse. Movements and exercises should never be done at the expense of rhythm. Rhythm should always stay the same. Tempo or speed, however, is a different matter.
Tempo — which is the rate of repetition of the rhythm — can be adjusted, depending on what your horse needs. Think of rhythm and tempo this way: A waltz is always done in 3/4 time. That is the rhythm of a waltz. But a waltz can be played faster or slower. In other words, the tempo can vary.
When should you ride at a tempo that’s different from the one your horse chooses? Let’s take an overly fresh horse as an example. You start your warm-up, and this horse is so excited that he picks up a trot that is much too quick. The longer you let him go at this clip, the more his tension builds. Left alone, he probably isn’t going to slow down. He’s like an overtired child who is so wound up that he can’t quiet his mind or his body. He needs you to help him calm down by asking him to trot at a much slower tempo than that of his normal working trot.
Slow the tempo by asking for a transition to the walk (or even the halt!), Then, just as he’s about to step into the walk, don’t finish the transition. Instead, allow him to jog forward very slowly. Think about riding “halfway to walk”, and then jog forward slowly. If he accelerates after a few strides, repeat the incomplete downward transition until he understands and is willing to stay in the slower trot.
Ride him in this lazy tempo — the opposite of what he wants to do — until he relaxes. Once you feel him relax, gradually allow the tempo to become more normal.
On the other hand, let’s say you have a horse that tends to get too slow and labored in his tempo. For example, his canter becomes 4-beat because the tempo is too slow. Quicken his tempo by doing a few strides of a lengthening. Feel how your seat moves faster during the lengthening. Then when you shorten the strides, keep the same quick tempo by moving your seat “as if” you’re still lengthening.
So whether or not you’re riding a dressage horse, always work in a regular rhythm and a tempo that allows your horse to be in good balance.

Tough Marketing for a tough market!
